It’s true, that’s how reluctant I am about theory. However, THE SHORTCUT CAN BE THE LONGER WAY IN DISGUISE!

The amount of times in my life when I’ve had the ‘practical mentality’ towards something I really wanted to achieve, is astounding. I’d always want to jump straight in and JUST DO IT! (I’m not advertising the sportswear company, I promise!) And guess what? The outcome would always end up the same. This is what would happen…

Because I hated setting goals, I just would skip that step, even though I knew it was important. I always felt it would be much quicker NOT goal setting, so I didn’t bother doing it, I just got down to the practicalities. Everything would always start off great until a problem arouse, then confusion and frustration would quickly set in, and one of these two things would happen…

1/- I give up and look back at it and feel like a complete and utter LOSER, or…

2/- I feel like a LOSER for not goal setting in the first place and wasting all that time which lead me to this stage!

Either way, I end up feeling like an even bigger LOSER because it took much longer to JUST DO IT, then simply goal setting in the first place. I feel like even more of a LOSER, telling you about what a LOSER I WAS. Help me feel a bit better about myself, have you ever done stuff like this? Be honest, I won’t laugh, not out loud anyway.

WHY SET GOALS?

I can’t stress enough the IMPORTANCE of setting goals. It’s that important, I think I’ll say it again, setting goals is really, really, really, really, REALLY, important! More or less everything we do, attempt to do, or think about doing, involves some kind of goal setting. For example:

* You want to get to work at 9 o’clock sharp, that’s goal setting.
* You want to go shopping on Friday, that’s goal setting.
* You decide you want to lose 7lbs. That’s more goal setting.

Get my drift? Obviously, when designing your DREAM life, it’s going to take a bit more advanced goal setting then those examples – A lot more! The psychological effect proper goal setting can have on you, is very beneficial. Take this example:

Imagine being in debt, let’s say of about 100k, and let’s also say that it MUST be repaid in 12 months or your home will be repossessed! Now, your not rich, in fact, you’re flat broke, SUPER BROKE. So, what are you options? I suppose you could just EMIGRATE!. Seriously though, I bet the thought would cross your mind though! Regardless, being broke you will inevitably be wondering, “How the HELL am I going to find this kind of money? AND in 12 months?”  Ironically, in the right context, that’s not the worst thought in the world to have. Understand that.

Until you ask this kind of question to yourself, whether verbally or in your mind, your brain will not be able, or want for that matter, to entertain the thought of goal setting let alone actually doing it PERIOD!. The question, though should be asked with an “I can do this!” mentality. If not, start clearing out your house and move everything into storage because the prospect of you preventing the repossession, well, FORGET IT!

Leaving you to have just a map to follow.. What’s that? “goal setting is hard”, did I hear you say?. Yeah it can be SOMETIMES. But the more and more you do it, the easier it becomes and more importantly, it will eventually become a habit! And, instead of looking at goal setting as a tedious task, you’ll start to enjoy doing it! Besides, the mere fact that it isn’t ‘easy’, you should encourage yourself  because life is ‘designed’ in a way that the easier things DON’T yield the greatest results!

Generally, it’s the minority that bother to set goals, and to me that in itself, is a good reason to do it, why? Because the average person’s life is NOT where they want it to be so therefore, it’s often good practice to use the majority as a CONTRARY indicator of what to do in a given situation. For example, the majority don’t take time to set goals, so you would do the opposite!

In short, if you want to have the best possible chance of making a success of your life, you really should set goals, but what do you want to be successful at?…

LET’S PUT IT INTO PERSPECTIVE

Here’s the thing, though I’m pro goal setting, I’m anti setting certain types of goals ahead of others. In other words, it’s incredibly important to prioritize your goal setting. Do you get what I mean? NO!

OK, I’ll quickly explain, it makes absolutely NO sense goal setting to achieve buying a car stereo, when you don’t even have a car yet! I say this in reference to getting first things first, and this is never more so true, when it comes to planning out your DREAM life! I always urge people, before they set out to follow any type of self improvement strategies, to ensure that their foundational values are rock-solid because this effects everything you do!…

In a nutshell, it’s incredibly important to build ROCK-SOLID foundations BEFORE you set off trying to rule the world. Please believe me, you’ll thank yourself for it, and me too, hopefully!

Moving Forward with any good plan, should have the following…

A Goal, this goal were possible, should be broken down into smaller goals, Small manageable, monthly, repayments so to speak. Yet, like the child who reverts to poor behavior after repeatedly being shown a “better” alternative, many of us grown-ups do the same thing after the glow of reading the latest self-help book or attending an inspiring seminar or workshop wears off.

Have you ever wondered why this occurs? Are we simply happy being spectators of other peoples success, afraid to change sufficiently to internalize all the valuable information we have just been given? While we may revert to our comfort zone, this action like any other is not without its consequences. It is often accompanied by increased frustration and a nagging sense of guilt and self-loathing for allowing ourselves to
succumb so easily.

It is very easy to sail through life in such a state. Where it can become a problem is in the area of personal relationships and in our place of employment or how we earn our living.

Corporate America is not interested in developing people at all levels.

The employee is usually a commodity to be used and dispensed with when their usefulness to the company expires. Fear can make people do funny things, especially if their livelihood is on the line. But, let’s be honest, the condition of many if not all companies and how they are managed, is the by-product or reflection of the company, countries and the world economy. Is the condition of the global economy purely based on the outcome of fear? If so we definitely need more secure people to manage our lives and the future of our children. As the economy has slowed down to a crawl, is this fear really rational? Are we all at risk of losing our jobs to say the very least?
